A child's hands pour water from a brass pot into a clay bowl on a brick wall while a sparrow waits

Jal Seva · जल सेवा

Summer reaches the sparrows first.

A clay bowl. Clean water. Someone who comes back to refill it. That is the whole of Jal Seva — and the coming back is the part that matters.

Six small acts, one habit.

  1. 01

    Notice देखना

Where do the sparrows land? Where does the dog rest at noon? Care begins with looking.

  2. 02

    Fill भरना

Clean water, in a bowl you can wash. Clay keeps it cool.

  3. 03

    Place रखना

In shade, off the road, where a cat can't wait beside it.

  4. 04

    Observe निहारना

Step back. Let them come. The distance is part of the respect.

  5. 05

    Refill फिर भरना

By afternoon it is warm and low. Wash it. Fill it again.

  6. 06

    Continue जारी रखना

Tomorrow, and the day after. A bowl once filled is a gesture. A bowl kept full is care.

Children who learn about the water cycle in a chapter can watch it here: the bowl that empties by afternoon, the bird that returns at the same hour.
